1. We are moving into a new age and people seem to change their appearance on a regular basis. Lighter skins look good in light colours, where darker skins look good in dark colours. There is no rule for make up or application.
Take all these factors in consideration when choosing colouring for make up.
Hair colour, Skin tone ( summer - darker tan, winter - paler skins ), Fashion colour palette changes every season.
Keep in mind what skin tones you have. Some people have more than one skin tone.
What I find that is most vital thing to keep in mind is the undertones of colours/make up. It plays a very important role when selecting for your skin tone. This is a difficult one and is best ask a professional make up consultant to guide you.
Example: Reds with blue/cool undertones or reds with orange/warm undertones
Green that borders to yellow/warm or green that borders to blue/cool.
Icy blues, warm violets, dusty pinks, candy pinks
Red brown, grey brown, muddy brown, etc.
1. If you have a fair skin, but you look sallow, avoid yellows and greys. It will make you look even worse.
Don't try and warm up your skin with a pink undertone foundation. It does not work. Rather use same tone (yellow) foundation and warm up with blush, eye shadow and lipstick. Colours to use - soft peaches/oranges, violets and pinks.
When applying colour to cheeks and eyes, do it with very light sweeps. Use charcoal or grey (not black, as it is too harsh) to line the eye and blend into soft wash. Try using charcoal brown, brown black, navy blue or burgundy mascara.
Apply lipstick with brush. This will give a lighter application of colour, especially when lips are thin.
Try just using lip gloss in pinks and neutrals.
Avoid dark colours. Soft reds can be worn at night time.
2. If you are fair, but tend to have a pink undertone or blush a lot, avoid pinks! Go for yellow, gold, greens, browns, greys.
Don't use blush. Instead use a light bronzer.
Use neutrals on lips, such as honey, beige.
3. There is not really a difference in medium and dark skins as there are so many shades and too many to mention. They are the fortunate ones and can wear almost any colour.
Just be aware of greys or ashy colours!!!
The most safe and natural colours are warm tones, ie; orange, golds, coppers, bronze, deep reds, burgundy, grape.
There are colours that look bold, bright and make a statement, ie; white, silver, yellow, pink.
The darker the skin, the brighter the colour will be, especially when using metallics.
Some darker skins have a tendency to have a yellow undertone. Warm up the skin with a copper blusher.
Most darker skins tend to shine a lot. Try using matte coloured powders instead of too shiny colours or creams colours.
As most lips are full, use a neutral (as per skin tone), dark lip colour or just add a clear gloss.
It is best to keep a very dark skin clean, as applying too much colour, will not look too good. Add mascara, false lashes, black eye kohl around eyes. Apply brown, grape or a deep current lip colour.
